Strength Training

Strength training is very important if you are fifty or older. It is an integral part of your fitness program. As we age we begin to lose our muscle tone and it is replaced by fat. If you have never used free weights, resistance equipment or resistance exercise, it is important to work with a trainer for one or two weeks until you are comfortable. A personal fitness trainer is able to teach you the proper way to use weights, resistance equipment and exercises so that you don’t injure yourself. Learning how much weight to lift and exactly how to do it gets good results.

Weight or resistance training combined with walking or low impact aerobics will give you energy and flexibility. If you find that you enjoy being in a gym or a facility like the YMCA then you will have access to many types of exercise equipment.

A class called interval training is fun because you move from machine to machine in short time increments and get weight and resistance training as well as aerobic exercise. It's another great step toward being a healthy and fit senior.

If you choose to do your workouts at home then you will need to invest in some equipment. Check out our
